I work in a sawmill, started out as a timber stacker then made machinist and now i'm the mill foreman all in 19 years. At first i was quite apprehensive taking on the foremans job thinking am i really upto it. I got a lot of support from my friend Tony who was the forman but now retired and was 100% sure i could do it. Apart from having to fire two guys so far and i'm hoping i don't have to do that again it's been ok. My job is to make sure the mill runs smoothly and i hand out the cutting orders after i've checked them for any mistakes and to ensure the right timber is used. But to be honest i really do miss machining, although i do occasionally get back on the machines whether it's a bandsaw or planer, when i'm needed.
