I think Woody Allen once said that laughing is the most fun you can have without engaging in sex. And Freud offered a theory of the verbal joke in which humor emerges when a "forbidden" concept suddenly and unexpectedly replaces a "legitimate" one as a narration is brought to a close. Thus, we shouldn't be surprised that sex (and so porn) has the potential to provide a basis for comedy.
Comedian Dave Attell believed so much in this premise that he supposedly risked
considerable personal funds financing a serial television show to bring it to life. In each episode, Attell and a top-tier guest comedian would crack jokes while viewing films from "The Golden Age of Porn" (1970s and 1980s), with hardcore footage toned down to softcore via video "pasties." And one or two veteran porn stars from the era would drop by to review their old work as well.
Dave's Old Porn ran for two seasons on
Showtime at the start of this decade, but was not picked up for a third. Attell keeps the dream alive via a website
here. Regrettably, however, it appears his
online store as yet sells no DVDs of the episodes which aired! It would be a tragedy if the only way one could see these again was via pirated copies!
Danny, would you invite suggestions about making more funny porn videos? Excluding any work you've done, what is the funniest porn scene you recall watching? And could any of your own work be used to put together a funny "blooper" reel? (Perhaps you and other FTV girls could team up to make such a reel.) Finally, what would you think about applying the "Attell method" to your old work, re-releasing footage with voice-over observational humor added?
