:mad:I was busy running around with my head cut off shooting yesterday and directing this russian girl (didn't understand instructions, so I had constantly gesture for her comprehend), when I left my camera on the couch, but it slipped and fell on the tile. The way it fell with the telephoto, it bent the housing where the camera and the lens interface, and destroyed the lens as well.
An $5000 nikon D3 :(

www.ftvgirls.com/camera.wmv

I went today and bought a nikon D700 in its place, D3's aren't available for a few weeks, and I have a shoot today, so I couldn't wait.

That's most distressing. The D3's a lovely camera (I'm more inclined towards Canon having received an Elph SD780 IS for my birthday, having spent the past few years using a 35mm Canon SLR and now setting aside a little $ to put towards a T1i maybe by this time next year). I suspect the D700 is just to fill in the gap of time before you can get your hands on another D3 though. They're tough cameras those Nikons--just the wrong angle on the wrong surface, but what can you do about it save do what you did, adapt & move on, but its gotta hurt, and not trying to pour salt in the wounds, just recalling how I felt when I, at age 13, dropped my 1st SLR on the cement floor with a 75-200mm telephoto lens attached. It all seemed fine, but as it turned out I'd destroyed the lightproofing somehow. It was 1 1/2 years later that I finally got a replacement that carried me through nearly 20 years of service, including getting drenched by whale water at MarineWorld, twice (once in Redwood City, the other in Vallejo). My sincerest condolences on the death of your camera, Rob. (No chance something along the lines of homeowners' insurance covering the replacement? Extreme long-shot probably...)

I shoot with Canon full frame cameras now.

That sucks you killed the "Chaos Creator".

That is why I am so careful with my cameras around models.
DSLR cameras with telephoto lenses are heavy and will not hit the ground lightly.

Another thing that is not good is you are not able to get a new D3.
Yup that is another great reason to go Canon. lol
Canon has all the markets edge and produce a lot more high end cameras
and make them readily available.

Yeah Rob and I have this discussion all the time Canon Vs Nikon. lol

In reality they are both incredible tools that get the job done.
It is the monkeys holding the cameras that make the difference.

That sucks. I'd cry if I broke my camera and it's only a $700 Leica. At least you have the means to replace it.

I can not replace my cams so easily! My site is not making the cookies like FTV yet.. lol

That is why I am extremely careful around models with my Cameras!

I would be out of shooting for a while if it broke.. :(

Oh, sh...ame! I feel with you for your loss.

I have only a Konica Minolta Dynax (=Maxxum) D5 for about $800 (that was back in 2006), but I got so used to it's handling, I'd have problems shooting with a new camera now.

I hope you'll get a replacement D3 (or D3x?).

That really sucks..if that had happen to me I would have gone into shock, but if I was making the money like Rob then the shock would wear off quickly.
Since I don't make that kind of money I brought a Nikon D100 and at the time I brought it,It cost me $2,000 just for the body and a Nikon 28-100mm lens.
If I broke mine I would have gone into shock and stop doing photography all together since no way would I ever try coming up with the money for a replacement.

At the rate technology advances, you would want to be replacing the body every few years anyway.

Sorry that your camera was damaged, Rob. I'm sure the lens is a goner, but can they repair the body? That way you could at least keep it as a back-up.

Is that the only camera you've used over the last 3 years? That's one heck of a lot of photos! Hopefully you can get another one if the original can't be fixed. The girl in the video, I assume she's the Russian model you were speaking about, looks nice. I liked her comments about you not being upset. She would have been really impressed back when your Lamborghini was totaled. I still can't believe how calm you were after that accident!

While we're on the subject of cameras. I'm about to purchase my first digital SLR, but I'm not sure which brand or model to buy. Does anyone have any suggestions or advice? Since I'm only a novice, I'd like something in the $600 to $1,000 price range.

Sorry to hear/see the damage to the Nikon especially after it's brought so many people pleasure and I hope it is/was repairable.

btw from the preview, the set looks as if it will be good. :D

Following on from you saying about your replacement camera, I Google'd it and have just seen the review of D700 http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/NikonD700/ (I think it's a mainly UK site but might be wrong there) where they even compared body sizes. Your D3 was MASSIVE, must feel strange with a much smaller body.

I am thoroughly sorry for your loss, sir. Well, about the cam having gone KIA... how do you stay that cool? If my $ 180 Kodak gets any damage, I'd have a nervous breakdown...

You asked... Pentax K20D. Compact, light weight. Well sealed. Has all the shooting toys rhar make digital desirable. And lens compatibility that goes backward past the '70's. Pentax glass was/is some of the finest ever made.
This suggestion ought to bring out the Canon/Nikon heads. But the Pentax is modestly priced for it's capability. Give it a look.

I wonder if the loss of a $5000 body and a $1200 lens will cut into the car budget? Damn, that would hurt!! D)

Marina seems like a very nice girl and genuinely concerned about what happened to the camera. When will her video appear?

Thanks! I'll take a look at the Pentax too. I was mainly floating back and forth between Nikon and Canon. I've always had good luck with Nikon cameras, but I'm not married to any one brand. I just want the best possible for the money.
That said....Last night I made the mistake of stopping at Best Buy, so NOW the Sony HDR-XR500V HD Camcorder is calling my name! Decisions, Decisions....I can get one or the other, but not both. Sigh.....:(

He will be locked in to whatever his lenses are, so it will be another Nikon.

My camcorder is a Vixia HFS10. I love it ;)

Robby Ray,

Damn that D2x shoots sharper images than the D3 by far!

Sony ate up all the Minolta technology. It's just too bad that none of that awesome old Minolta/Rokkor glass can't be used on any of the new cameras.

Here's a nice kit. A Pentax Kx w/DA18-55 and DA 55-300
At full list it's only a bit over a grand. A savvy shopper should be able to get it for much less.
12.4MP
And it can shoot 720p video at 24 fps. Not bad, huh?

As far as best possible for the $$. Go back to the K10 and start reading the reviews of the Pentax line, then work your way forward. I think you will be surprised.
Good Luck!!

Shot with a supposedly inferior camera. But what lens?

It is an inferior camera. The resolution is similar to the D3 though (the D3X has higher resolution).

Just wondering, what's with the huge watermarks? Those are alot bigger then the what appears on most images. Are those camera specific? I've always been under the impression they are editied on afterwards.

Sorry to hear about your camera rob, i have absolutely no knowledge about cameras, but i'm sure Rob's always uses the best camera he can get. The picture quality of all Rob's shoots are the best i've ever seen.

I wonder if you have ever shot a roll of Ektachrome 64? Using a plain old camera? Just one with a great piece of glass and a camera with a good meter?
I think the resolution argument would end there. It can't be matched by ANY digital.
The weakest link in the chain, film or digital, is the lens. Hence my question.
The camera is a recording device, it cannot make up for poor lens quality. In fact, the pixel count of the recording device will magnify the defects/aberrations of the lens.

By the way, what do you shoot?

The difference would be the sensor and associated technology, the D2X would be using older technology, hence inferior. The resolution has nothing to do with it.
