I'm interested in knowing what video format you guys are watching. I just recently added flv (flash) video to the site.

Kink's sites do offer a smartphone viewing format but I've never tried it. WHO wants to watch porn on a 3 1/2 inch phone screen?

I really don't know, Danielle. Whatever it is Windows Media plays them. I am mostly into music, if you can coach me into how to find out what you want to know I'll give it a shot.

I also download the other versions and look if they're completely uploaded, so I can send an Error Report if they aren't.

Both AVI and WMV are audio and video containers, meaning that they are used to play video on Windows systems. However, there are some significant differences between the two technologies.

AVI Origin
AVI stands for Audio Video Interleave and was introduced by Microsoft in 1992 as part of their push to make Windows more suitable for media viewing and editing: the program was officially called "Video for Windows."

AVI Current Use
AVI is not widely used outside of the PC video streaming arena and has fallen somewhat out of favor with both power users and general users. However, despite its outdatedness, there has been some success getting AVI to work with the more modern and common MPEG-4; the issue between the two is that MPEG-4 needs to be able to read a few frames ahead, but AVI's original specifications do not.

WMV Origin
WMV stands for Windows Media Video, which is the general name for group of related technologies; the entire WMV family deals with video and audio in some way. You are much more likely to come into contact with WMV files than AVI files on most modern Windows systems.

WMV Current Use
WMV files are most commonly found on Windows PC to stream video files that have been downloaded either from the Internet or are stored on removable media, such as CD-ROMs and DVDs. WMV 9, an offshoot of the original WMV project, has been accepted by the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers as a standard for HD DVD and Blu-Ray.

Cross Platform Functionality
AVI's greatest advantage over WMV is that it is more compatible across different platforms. WMV files can be made to work on Mac and Linux, but it can be a somewhat tedious process to get them to work properly, so, if you are at all interested in having your content be viewable across multiple platforms, then AVI is probably the better technology for you to use.

Compression and Video Quality
WMV's advantage is that it compresses the video more than AVI, so a video in WMV will take up less hard drive space than that same video in AVI. However, this advantage comes at a cost: WMVs tend to be lower quality than AVIs.

MP4, from what I hvae seen is more used on portable devices, and is of less quality and most, again this is only from what I have seen
.mov is use by Macs and is there version of the wmv format, and is used on Mac computer and such.

If your question is specifically regarding this site, then I don't have a preference, I usually chose the one with the highest quality. Personally, I would love to see more more HD on 1080P at 6000kps as you look superb in HD :)

H.264 MPEG-4 will work on all sorts of devices: Macs, PCs, Linux, iOS, Android, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, all sorts of TV boxes, some smart TVs, etc. Not to mention, I think you could probably get away with using about 5MB/s per movie keeping it at the same resolution, saving server space and bandwidth.

I will continue using .wmv since the majority of people use that format. As far as mpeg goes...well I will definitely look into using that too. I think you are the first person who has asked about using that as a format.

H.264 MPEG-4 = .MP4, which was asked about in some the above posts back in 8/2011. Having both would be fine too, but then you'd lose the advantage or server storage savings. I would guess you wouldn't need the .MOV version any more if you added the .MP4 instead, so maybe there would still be a gain there.

At this point, I'm not sure WMV is actually used by a majority of online video sites as it's not nearly as compatible with mobile and tablet devices made in the last several years as H.264 MP4s. I don't know what the usage statistics of your site look like to know how much of a deal this might be. And while WMV works on PC, Macs, and Linux fairly easily, at least on Macs even the official Microsoft codec, Flip4Mac, doesn't recognize the pixel aspect ratio flag you set in the videos. The movies end up displaying at 4:3 with square pixels (1440x1080 on screen, as encoded) instead of 16:9 with rectangular pixels (1920x1080 on screen). This holds true on Mac and Linux with the most popular media players like QuickTime, MPlayer, and VLC, and even on PC if players other than Windows Media Player (and maybe a few others) are used.

Obviously, it's your site and the most important thing for everyone is content and interaction, and you're great with both. Format of videos is a convenience and may have some impact on the financial side of things (users on newer platforms, server space, bandwidth). Perhaps you could experiment with a post or two, putting up a 1440x720 4MB/s or 1920x1080 6MB/s MP4 option. If you need a free encoder, Handbrake (http://handbrake.fr) is definitely the best. If you try it out and have questions, feel free to let me know as I've used that software for quite some time.
